  9. <p>The 106th TRS is the wing's flying component and has operated the RF-4C since February 1971. The unit was created as the 106th Observation Squadron in January 1924 and was called to active duty in November 1940 at Birmingham Airport. It returned to state control in November 1946 with the A-26, and became the 106th TRS in February 1951. The squadron was mobilized for Korean War operations with the RB-26 in April 1951 and was released from active duty in December 1952. The RF-84F was assigned early in 1957, with a further period of active duty for the Berlin crisis, during which the unit was located at Dreux AB, France between November 1961 and August 1962. The 117th TRG was activated in October 1962 and upgraded to Wing status in December 1974.
